How to file a complaint about noise from a bar/restaurant
08/15/2013 1:08 PM
As a resident of Highland, if you feel there is an issue with a bar/restaurant and the City's Noise Ordinance, please use the following link to read information about appropriately filing a complaint.
As it pertains to excessive noise in the Highland neighborhood, there are a few things you can do at the City level to report such offenses.
Chapter 36 of the Denver Revised Municipal Code
covers in detail the City's noise ordinance.
If you are concerned about noise from a neighboring restaurant or bar, it is encouraged to read the document in it's entirety. If you feel an establishment is in violation, you can do two things:
If you feel an establishment is consistently in violation, call the department of Environmental Health and speak with Mr. Paul Riedesel [720-865-5410]. You can make an appointment with Mr. Riedesel M-F from 9am-11pm to measure the decibel level ON YOUR PROPERTY in relation to the establishment in question. A simple request will spur the Department to write a warning letter to the establishment stating they are the subject of a complaint. At that point, Mr. Riedesel will come to your property and measure the decibel level. If the establishment is in violation, a fine may be imposed. It's important to know that the acceptable decibel level stated in the Revised Municipal Code does NOT cover sound caused by HUMAN VOICES.
If a serendipitous occasion occurs that involves unruly patrons or loud music emanating from the establishment and you feel the noise is excessive, call the Denver Police Department's non-emergency phone number [720-913-2000]. The police department will prioritize the call and will come out to the establishment. Bars and restaurants are responsible for keeping their patrons under control while at their establishment.
Again, if you feel a restaurant is CONSISTENTLY violating the noise ordinance, it is best to call Mr. Riedesel and make an appointment for him to monitor the situation with his sound equipment.
